Quick answer: A new mattress can feel firmer at home because the showroom model has had use. A different foundation, tight bedding, changed pillow height or a cold room can also alter the feel. Verify the model and setup first, then watch for an improving trend during normal use. Report damage or a wrong item promptly.
The showroom mattress felt right. The mattress delivered to your bedroom has the same name on the label, but your shoulder notices the difference immediately.
You are not imagining it. “Same model” does not always mean “same first-night sensation.” In our Edmonton and Calgary showrooms, the useful question is not simply whether the new mattress feels firm. It is why it feels firmer and whether the cause is likely to change.
Before waiting for it to soften, check these five things
A break-in period cannot correct a delivery mistake or a poor support system. Spend ten minutes documenting the setup before deciding that time is the answer.
- Match the product. Compare the invoice with the model label and law tag. Check the size, model name, firmness and any split or custom configuration. Photograph the labels while the delivery is recent.
- Look for delivery damage. Check the fabric, seams, corners and surface. Report a wrong or visibly damaged mattress promptly.
- Photograph what is underneath. Capture the frame, centre support, centre legs and slats. A picture is often more useful than describing the base as “a platform.”
- Check the bedding fit. A protector or fitted sheet stretched too tightly across a deep mattress can restrict how freely the quilted top moves.
- Note what else changed. Record the pillow, room temperature and whether the showroom mattress was tested flat or on an adjustable base.
If the model is wrong, the mattress is damaged, or the support underneath it appears unsafe, contact the store now. Do not wait for the end of an adjustment period.
Why does the showroom mattress feel softer?
The display mattress has a head start. Shoppers have already lain on it, and its foams, fibres and quilted surface have had regular use. Your mattress has not.
Manufacturers describe this differently by model. Beautyrest Canada says it is normal for a mattress to break in and soften with use. Tempur-Pedic Canada says its own TEMPUR material can take a couple of weeks to feel more natural as it responds to body weight and temperature. Those statements support the general idea of an adjustment period, but they do not justify promising that every mattress will soften by a particular percentage or on a particular day.
Your old mattress also shaped your expectations. If it had gradually softened or developed a familiar impression, your body learned that surface. A level new mattress can initially feel unusually firm even when it is providing the support you selected in the showroom.
That is why we compare the complete sleep systems—not only the names printed on the mattresses.
The mattress is only one part of what you feel
The foundation or frame
A rigid platform, a flexible foundation, an adjustable base and widely spaced slats do not behave identically. The support underneath the mattress can affect comfort, performance and warranty eligibility.
Check whether the frame has centre support, whether the centre legs reach the floor, and whether the slats are intact and properly spaced. Compare the setup with the requirements for your exact model in our mattress warranty information. If the foundation is worn or incompatible, review the available mattress foundations only after confirming what the manufacturer permits.
If you tested the mattress with the head or feet elevated but now sleep flat, you changed the position as well as the room. Our guide to adjustable bases versus traditional frames explains the practical differences.
The protector and fitted sheet
A mattress protector is important for keeping the sleep surface clean and for meeting the conditions of our comfort program. It still needs to fit the mattress depth correctly. If the skirt is overstretched, the protector bunches, or the sheet pulls the corners upward, remake the bed without forcing the fabric and check the stated pocket depth.
If your existing protector does not fit, our Essentials Mattress Protector is one low-profile option to compare. The right choice depends on mattress depth and the terms of your purchase; buying another protector is not a substitute for diagnosing the mattress.
The pillow
A new mattress changes how far your shoulder settles into the bed. That changes the distance between your head and the sleep surface. A pillow that worked on the old mattress may now hold your neck too high or too low, making the entire bed feel wrong.
Try to recreate the position you used during the showroom test. If the pressure is mainly at the neck rather than the shoulder or hip, reassess the pillow before concluding that the mattress firmness is the only problem.
The room temperature
Temperature matters for some foams, but it is not a universal explanation. Tempur-Pedic states that TEMPUR material can feel less responsive and slightly firmer in a very cold room, then become more responsive as it warms from body heat. Ask whether this behaviour applies to the materials in your model.
Do not use a heating pad, electric blanket or another source of high heat to force a mattress to soften. Follow the care instructions for the specific brand.
Use the comfort trial to gather evidence—not merely to wait
Canadian Mattress’s 60 Night Comfort Guarantee currently requires at least 30 nights of sleep on an eligible mattress before an exchange. It also has protector, eligibility, fee and timing conditions, so read the complete policy that applies to your purchase.
During the trial, keep a short note every few nights:
- where you feel pressure or discomfort
- which sleep position brings it on
- how long it takes to appear
- whether the problem is improving, unchanged or worsening
- whether you sleep noticeably differently away from home
Direction matters more than a dramatic overnight change. “My shoulder pressure is gradually easing, but my hip is unchanged” tells us more than “it is still firm.”
Give the mattress normal, consistent use. Rotate it only if the manufacturer permits rotation, and do not flip a one-sided mattress. Avoid adding a topper early in the trial; a topper can hide the feel you are supposed to be evaluating. Keep the law tag attached and continue using the required protector.
When should you contact the mattress store?
Contact the store promptly if the mattress or firmness is not what you ordered, there is visible damage, the frame appears unsafe, or the labels do not match the invoice.
Contact the store during the trial if discomfort is not showing a meaningful improving trend, you cannot reproduce the showroom comfort at home, or you are unsure about a policy deadline. Do not wait until the final day to begin the conversation.
Speak with an appropriate healthcare professional about severe or worsening pain, numbness, weakness, or another concerning symptom. Mattress staff can troubleshoot a product and sleep setup; they cannot diagnose a medical condition.
What to bring when you ask us for help
Bring the order number plus photos of the mattress label, protector and support underneath the bed. Add your notes about sleep position and where the pressure occurs. With those details, our team can work through the system in a useful order: delivery, foundation, bedding, pillow, room conditions and finally mattress comfort.
If an exchange becomes the right answer, that information also helps identify what needs to change—surface pressure relief, deeper support, ease of movement or something else—instead of blindly choosing “softer.”
