Quick answer: Protect the mattress from liquid, follow its sewn-in cleaning instructions, check the frame and centre support, and rotate only when the manufacturer allows it. Do not flip a one-sided mattress, soak foam, carry the bed by its handles or assume every removable-looking cover is washable. Keep the receipt and law tag.
Mattress care is less about performing a monthly ritual than avoiding a few expensive mistakes. Most damage happens through moisture, inadequate support, rough moving or well-intended cleaning that the materials were not designed to tolerate.
Use this schedule as a reminder, then let the instructions for your exact model override any general advice.
On delivery day
- Confirm the model and size. Photograph the product label and law tag while they are easy to reach.
- Inspect before covering it. Look at seams, corners and fabric for delivery damage.
- Save the paperwork. Keep the invoice, warranty and protector receipt together. Manufacturer warranty periods and body-impression allowances can depend on the code printed on the law label.
- Remove plastic safely. Let a new mattress air in a ventilated room and dispose of packaging where children and pets cannot reach it.
- Check the support system. Confirm that centre legs touch the floor and slats or the foundation meet the requirements for the mattress.
If the mattress initially feels different from the display, check the complete setup before modifying it. Our troubleshooting guide explains why a new mattress can feel firmer at home.
Every week: keep the sleep surface dry and clean
Use sheets and a properly fitted, washable protector. A protector should cover the area you need without pulling so tightly that it changes the feel of the top panel. Our guide to what mattress protectors actually do explains the difference between a protector, pad and topper.
When changing the bedding, let the mattress surface air briefly. Check for dampness, a loose protector or a fitted sheet that is straining the corners.
After a spill: act quickly but do not soak the mattress
- Remove sheets and the protector.
- Blot liquid with clean, absorbent towels. Press rather than rub.
- Follow the mattress label or manufacturer instructions for the cover and stain type.
- Use only the amount of moisture the instructions permit.
- Let the area dry completely before remaking the bed.
Do not improvise with bleach, dry-cleaning fluid, upholstery protectant, a steam cleaner or heavy fragrance. Sealy Canada advises owners not to soak a mattress or use dry-cleaning fluid. Tempur-Pedic Canada says many—but not all—of its mattress covers can be removed and washed, and directs owners to the sewn-in label before removing a cover.
A zipper does not automatically mean a cover is customer-removable. Beautyrest’s Canadian care instructions tell owners not to remove zippered mattress coverings. Check the brand and model, not a generic cleaning video.
Every three to six months: inspect the system underneath
Remove enough bedding to see whether the mattress is level. Then look underneath:
- Are frame bolts tight?
- Do all centre supports reach the floor?
- Are slats cracked, bowed or out of place?
- Is the foundation sagging or making new noise?
- Has the frame shifted away from the headboard?
A support problem can look like mattress sagging. Beautyrest Canada specifically recommends checking the foundation before submitting a body-impression claim. Review our mattress warranty information and the manufacturer’s current requirements before adding plywood or changing the base.
Should you rotate or flip the mattress?
Rotate only when the manufacturer permits it. Rotation means turning the mattress head to foot. Beautyrest Canada recommends periodic rotation for its one-sided mattresses to encourage even wear, while the interval and advice can differ by model.
Flip only a two-sided mattress designed for sleeping on both surfaces. Most contemporary one-sided mattresses have support materials on the bottom and comfort layers on top. Flipping one does not produce a second usable sleep surface.
If the mattress is heavy, use two people. Handles are commonly intended to help position the mattress, not carry its full weight.
When moving or storing a mattress
Use a mattress bag and protect the corners. Do not sharply bend an innerspring mattress unless its manufacturer says the model is adjustable-base compatible. Carry it on edge for access through the home, then store it flat if it will remain stored for an extended period. Do not place heavy objects on top.
Before moving an adjustable base, disconnect power and follow its owner’s manual. Motors, legs and retainer components have different handling instructions from the mattress.
What normal wear does—and does not—mean
Comfort materials commonly settle and soften with use. A visible impression is not automatically a manufacturing defect; warranties specify how an impression is measured and what depth is covered. Stains, an inadequate foundation or a removed law tag can also complicate a claim.
If you see a developing dip, photograph the mattress and the support system. Use a straight edge only as directed by the manufacturer or retailer. Contact the original seller before dismantling the bed or applying a home repair.
